2019 REPORT: Media Literacy, Critical Thinking, and Coding Education

Already a regular partner of the campaign since 2011, the Information Society Development Foundation (Fundacja Rozwoju Społeczeństwa Informacyjnego – FRSI)  was again the Polish partner for ALL DIGITAL Week 2019.

ALL DIGITAL Week 2019 in Poland was focused mainly on critical thinking and media literacy topics, but other important issues like encouraging young people to coding education were also highlighted. For the past years, as a part of the ALL DIGITAL Week campaigns, FRSI with the partners have shown the power of the Internet. In 2019 campaign a lot of attention was put to the need for a more conscious use of the Internet.

Participants of the ALL DIGITAL Week 2019 campaign were able to learn what “fake news” is, why it is so dangerous and how to protect against it. In addition to that, during the campaign FRSI was continuously focused on supporting teachers and other local trainers in order to provide access to high quality coding education and digital skills in general.

Thanks to the ALL DIGITAL Week campaign, FRSI started providing the Minecraft: Education Edition game with the the pack of education scenarios to the Local Coding Clubs around Poland.

FRSI and its partners were truly satisfied about scenarios of workshops developed within the “Click. Check. Understand” project, which is implemented by FRSI together with the Goethe Institut and the Polityka Insight. Also we are very proud about providing Minecraft: Education Edition with special education scenarios. This new for the Local Coding Clubs tool for learning digital skills was very encouraging to join the campaign creatively.

Altogether 195 organizations took part in the campaign; over 420 events were organized, and more than 11,200 participants joined them; over 100,000 people were reached with online and offline media.

2019: Media Literacy, Critical Thinking, and Coding Education

Already a regular partner of the campaign since 2011, the Information Society Development Foundation (Fundacja Rozwoju Społeczeństwa Informacyjnego – FRSI)  is the Polish partner for ALL DIGITAL Week 2019.

ALL DIGITAL Week 2019 in Poland will be focused mainly on critical thinking and media literacy topics, but other important issues like encouraging young people to coding education will also be highlighted.

For the past nine years, as a part of the ALL DIGITAL Week campaigns,  FRSI and their partners have shown the power of the Internet. They are trying to convince that it is worth to use the innumerable benefits available there, so our lives became better, richer and more comfortable every day. In 2018 campaign a lot of attention was also put to the need for a more conscious  use of the Internet.

FRSI wants every person who participates in the campaign to be able to learn what “fake news” is, why it is so dangerous and how to protect against it. We want to show how to use the Internet in a more conscious way  and how to assess the reliability and genuineness of the information.

For ALL DIGITAL Week 2019, FRSI encourages their partners to use scenarios of workshops developed within the “Click. Check. Understand” project, which is implemented by FRSI together with the Goethe Institut and the Polityka Insight.

In addition to that, FRSI  is continuously focused on supporting teachers and other local trainers in order to provide access to high quality coding education and digital skills in general. Thanks to the Code Week campaign, they started providing the Minecraft: Education Edition with the pack of education scenarios to the Local Coding Clubs around Poland.

All interested partners like libraries, culture centres, schools, local organizations as well as volunteers are warmly invited to join the campaign.

FRSI plans to involve 10,000 people in the campaign activities.

2018 REPORT: Think critical, beware fake news

Already a regular partner of the campaign since 2011, the Information Society Development Foundation (Fundacja Rozwoju Społeczeństwa Informacyjnego – FRSI) was the Polish national partner for ALL DIGITAL Week 2018.

In Poland, this year’s theme of the campaign was critical thinking. FRSI has established close cooperation with the Polish Humanitarian Action, which joined in preparing a workshop scenario. The workshop “World News” was targeted at young people and adults.

The objectives of the workshop were:

  1. to realize that our perception of information is strongly related to the place where we live,
  2. to encourage to take a look on the same event from a different perspective than on a daily basis,
  3. to understand that information presented in media (especially in social media) does not necessarily rely on reliable sources,
  4. to find out how to assess the credibility of information.

Here is the script for the event in Polish

FRSI are especially proud of the scenario of the workshop “World News” developed jointly with Polish Humanitarian Action. Participants of the workshop were divided into four teams of journalists who prepare tomorrow’s edition of the online magazine “World News”. They had to visit four stations where some tasks were waiting for them. And at the end of the workshop they had another task to do all together.

FRSI encouraged libraries, schools, community centers, non-governmental organizations and other local institutions that offer Internet access to participate in the campaign. In total, 245 local institutions were involved. All of them organized meetings based on this year’s workshop scenario or materials from the previous editions.

The campaign was also supported and promoted by partners. In addition to the Polish Humanitarian Action, these were the following entities: Center for Citizenship Education, Foundation Activation, Empowering Children Foundation, Foundation for Educational Innovation Little School, Orange Foundation, The School with Class Foundation, Association of Creative Initiatives “ę”, Microsoft.

In total, 4,900 people participated in ALL DIGITAL Week activities and about 3 mln were reached.

Promotion

FRSI promoted the campaign through the dedicated website www.tydzienzinternetem.pl, social media channels, and on numerous websites and portals that belong to FRSI, among others: frsi.org.pl; biblioteki.org – the biggest and the most significant portal targeted at public libraries in Poland; labib.pl – social networking portal targeted at selected group of innovative librarians; monthly newsletter “A library – it’s happening here!”

FRSI ensured publicity in media at the national and regional level. At the same time libraries, schools and other local institutions were equipped with ready-to-use templates of promotional materials: press releases, posters, banners, leaflets. They could use them independently, at the local level.

2018 Plans: Think critical, beware fake news

Already a regular partner of the campaign since 2011, the Information Society Development Foundation (Fundacja Rozwoju Społeczeństwa Informacyjnego – FRSI)  is the Polish national partner for ALL DIGITAL Week 2018.

Activities

The idea of a campaign is based on FRSI experiences and good practices. They will invite libraries, schools, local NGOs, houses of culture and other institutions to join the campaign and organize meetings for people of all ages. During meetings participants will learn how to identify fake news and how to assess the reliability of information which floods them 24 hours per day. The meetings will be prepared according to the ready-to-use scenario developed by FRSI (or they will be based on others scenarios and materials of FRSI partners).

The scenario will start with a short and attractive movie. The movie will be a starting point for further exercises and discussions. As in previous years, the meetings organized locally will be short (up to 2 hours) in order to attract people’s attention.

At the same time libraries, schools and other institutions will disseminate information about campaign in social media. This way more people will be aware of the campaign and inspired.

2017: Do it yourself, be inspired, make money – Get Online Week in Poland

Already a regular partner of the European GOW since 2011, the Information Society Development Foundation (Fundacja Rozwoju Społeczeństwa Informacyjnego – FRSI) was the Polish national partner for Get Online Week 2017.

Activities

Libraries, schools, local NGOs, houses of culture and other institutions that join the campaign organized meetings for people of all ages. The meetings were prepared according to the ready-to-use scenarios developed by FRSI or its partners available on the Poland’s Get Online Week website www.tydzienzinternetem.pl.

To attract users, the organizers focused on topics common for everyone: cooking, fashion and do-it-yourself. During those meetings participants were encouraged to improve some of their skills using Internet. They could also discover that they were able not only to learn online, but also share their knowledge or passions, and – as a result – to increase their entrepreneurship.

The meeting (workshop) plan included a catchy quiz with questions about skills and online sources, then there is a short presentation of a local guests (e.g. a person who runs a blog). In the last part participants learned where to find tools or information that would help them to increase their employability or entrepreneurship.

At the same time the GOW partners in Poland disdseminate information about campaign and unexpected facts and stories in social media. This way more people could be aware of the campaign and inspired.

The topic of Cybersecurity was included in the ready-to-use materials for all partners. E.g., during the quiz mentioned above all participants were to learn about popular blogs, websites and online shops, they would also provided with concrete tips how to use these online tools safely (when they are online users and when they are owners of blog / website).

The issues related to e-Services were also covered by scenarios. The focus was placed on e-Commerce. Participants of meetings could discover that there were many local artists, designers, other entrepreneurial people people who had established their websites or blogs and thus earned money by selling their products (or by publishing advertisements on their websites).

The topic of Employment and Entrepreneurship was present during the whole campaign – both at meetings organized by campaign partners and in communication in social media.

Participants of the campaign were familiarized with inspiring stories of people, who ran their own business online or who use online tools to improve their career and position on labour market. They learned that they didn’t need to complete special courses or live in a big city in order to become an entrepreneur. And that their own passion, even simple things they do every day could be valued by others.

Overview of GOW16 Commitments and activities

Already a regular partner of the European GOW since 2011, the Information Society Development Foundation (Fundacja Rozwoju Społeczeństwa Informacyjnego – FRSI)  coordinated Get Online Week 2016.

Young people participating in the Get Online Week 2016 campaign in Poland found out an easy and attractive way how to use social networks and other online services to build their professional image online and avoid common mistakes (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, YouRock etc. as well as national social tools). Setting up a blog or video blog was presented as a method to develop interests and improve skills. Participants also found out how to use safely online services, especially social networks: for example, what threats were related with registering in not trusted services, which logins and passwords were safe, how to configure privacy settings on Facebook and other networks, what content shouldn’t be posted on the Internet, what might be the consequences, where they could find help if necessary.

Adults found out where and how they could buy safely goods and services online, which tools might help them, where they could get support and information on their rights.

FRSI collaborated with Nobody’s Children Foundation (FDN) and built a stronger cooperation with WIOSNA Association (literally SPRING Association), who was a partner in the previous GOW campaign in Poland. Business partners such as Microsoft, UPC, and Orange were also involved.
